How I developed My Ear

There are few things that I teach where I'm sure there isn't a better way of doing it. When it comes to ear training, I'm as sure as I can be that this is the way to do it.

When I started out playing, I wasn't even aware that you could train your ear. I just chalked it up to you either had a good ear or you didn't.

Around six months into playing, I saw an ad in Guitar World magazine that talked about how you could develop your ear and how that would impact your playing.

I was intrigued and bought the course.

The basis of this course was learning the different intervals, and the idea was that whenever you heard anything, you simply would follow along from note to note, and that way, you'd be able to play it.

I put a lot of time into using this system and learned the sound of each interval, but it didn't really improve my playing much. I just got better at doing intervallic ear training tests.

This system looked good on paper, but in actual application, it was a horror show. I equate it to drawing by numbers, where you only see the next number you're going to and completely miss the bigger picture.

A couple of years later, I went to G.I.T in Hollywood for their one-year program. They taught ear training in the exact same way, so again, I thought that this is the way to do it. It must be right if a famous school like M.I uses it?

It wasn't until my mid to late 20s that I discovered the system I use now: Movable Do Solfege.

I discovered it out of necessity by needing a way to relate to written notation while studying orchestral composition. I didn't want to be tied down by an instrument and was determined to make notation my instrument instead.

I studied it via tons of courses from Dick Grove's School Without Walls series and also through experimentation on my own and score reading.

When I emerged seven years later to get back to the guitar seriously again, I had a completely new way of hearing and now went to work on how to apply this knowledge on the guitar.

After teaching this way to hundreds of private Skype students over the past 8 years, I feel really confident that this works for anyone, regardless of level, if they're willing to put the work in.

Anyone Can Develop a Great Ear

I absolutely love teaching this method because of the incredible results I've seen in my own playing and composing, as well as the progress it has brought to countless students over the years.

Ignoring ear training is one of the biggest time wasters and mistakes you can make as a musician.

You can never outplay the level of your musical hearing—it's at the core of everything you do as a musician.

Anyone can develop a great ear, and I really mean that.

The way ear training works is the same mechanism our brain uses to remember the names of songs.

If you can hear your favorite song and name it, you have what it takes to learn how to identify the building blocks of music as taught in this course.

The only difference from remembering song names is that you learn how to accurately identify smaller pieces of musical information.

At its core, it's still the same process of putting names to sounds.

This isn't a magic fix; it will take daily practice to see the results.

But the good news is that it's easy to do the work when you know exactly what to do and are confident that you're on the right track.
